Montem Lane Mosque, Slough. September 2006 |
|
When the Slough Islamic Trust was founded in 1968, it was with the intention of establishing a mosque in Slough. The following year, they bought and converted a house on the junction of Montem Lane and Arthur Road, which became the town's first mosque. It functioned as a religious school and a library as well as a mosque. Although this was originally seen as a temporary measure, the Montem Lane Mosque is now a permanent fixture. |

In 1979, the Slough Islamic Trust leased a plot of land in Diamond Road from Slough Borough Council, and in 1982 the go-ahead was given for a mosque to be built on the site. The foundation stone was laid on the 8th May 1983, and in 1985 the Jamia Masjid Ghausia was completed. |

Also in the 1980s, the Marystrong Church in Stoke Poges Lane, formerly used by the Welsh Congregational Church, was purchased by the Muslim community and converted into a mosque. This was quickly outgrown, however, so the old building was pulled down and a purpose-built mosque was constructed on the site. While it was being built, worship took place in other nearby buildings. The new building was the Jamia Masjid Islamic Centre. Construction began in 1999 and although it has been in use since 2000, the official opening was in 2001. Guests included Yousuf Islam, formerly pop singer Cat Stevens. It is currently being redesigned. |
