Elephants on the loose

On the 23rd of March, 1897, two elephants roamed loose on the streets of Slough, having escaped from Sanger's Circus. The first to make a break for freedom was a female elephant, who was followed by a male. On failing to find her, the male elephant started trumpeting and approached a young man who had to take refuge behind a fence. The keeper eventually caught up and managed to get both elephants back to the herd. The young man, who was called Morton, was unharmed.
