Full Description: The building on the left of the group is 74 Upton Road, otherwise known as Upton House. Upton House is an early Georgian building dated to about 1700 and subsequently listed in 1980.
The caption on the photograph refers to 1909 when the school was called Upton House School and to 1925 when it was known as Upton House High Class School for Girls. For most of this period Miss Mary Etherington was the Principal of the school.
The caption on the photograph also refers to the school adjoining the Paddington Green Children's Hospital Convalescent Home. The Convalescent Home was apparently established for the patients who had passed through the Children's Hospital at Paddington Green, London. It held 24 children and was free to children of the poor 'without letter of recommendation'. The Home was located in a house called Fair View. |
