Full Description: View of Windsor Castle was built originally by William the Conqueror following the invasion of 1066. The castle is located on a chalk bluff overlooking the Thames and is reputed to be the largest inhabited castle in the world. It is also claimed to have been been inhabited for the longest continuous period of any castle. Over the years, considerable alterations have been made to the buildings by various monarchs.
In the photograph the Round Tower can be seen to the right of centre, and to the left can be seen the North Terrace and the State Appartments at the east end . This part of the castle was much altered and rebuilt in the reign of Wlliam IV in the early 19th century.
The Lascelles Bridge over the M4 Motorway is assumed to have been built at the time of construction of the motorway in 1965. |
