Full Description: This is the same view as photograph sl-sl-rhs_l3_09canalmidgrn46a-i-00-000.tif. By this time the canal has ceased to be a major thoroughfare for carrying goods and is now a waterway used as a source of pleasure, such as walking and cycling, nature study, and fishing and boating facilities. At one time there were proposals to fill in the canal and replace it with a ring road but public opinion prevented this from happening. By 2008 the canal was managed by British Waterways.
The five mile section of the canal between Slough and Peachy opened in 1882 was one of the last to be dug in Britain. It has no locks or tunnels and gives access to approximately 2000 miles of inland waterways in Britain. |
