Brief Description: A view of Slough High Street, looking west, showing the Leopold Institute and Public Hall on the right. About 1957.
Subject Date: About 1957
Owner: Slough Library
Contributor: Slough Library

Full Description: In 1955 Slough was chosen to be a 'safety town', and hosted what became known as the 'Slough Experiment'. This two-year scheme, which ran from April 1955 to March 1957, included the installation of traffic lights along the High Street and Bath Road, which were timed so that someone sticking to the speed limit should have an uninterrupted flow of green lights along the road. This postcard also shows the Leopold Institute, Barclays Bank, Ideal Ballrooms, Baileys Cooked Meats, Blindells Shoes and Dorothy Perkins on the right hand side of the street, with W. Timpson Footwear and a sign for Archers Stationers on the left. Kelly's Directory from 1957 lists all of these buildings as being on the High Street in that year. The Leopold Institute displays the clock installed in 1930 to replace th original. The postcard was published by R. A. Hawkes, The Square, Stow-on -the Wold, Glos.
