| Full Description: The Reg Harrison Collection is a unique and fascinating set of 20 bound volumes of photographs, newspaper clippings, written history and over 700 slides showing how Slough has changed over the last hundred years. Mr Harrison had the foresight to record this information before it was lost, and, as such, the collection contains material which cannot be found anywhere else. The collection has become one of the key parts of Slough's heritage.
As well as a recorder of the changing face of Slough, Reg Harrison was a stalwart of the local community. He was an active member of Slough & District Civic Society and of the Leopold Institute.
He also used his impressive slide collection to give lectures on our town’s history. His wife, Barbara, suffered from arthritis for 25 years of her brief 60 year life, and it was in support of their fundraising for the Arthritis and Rheumatism Council that he started to show his collection of historic slides and photos. He raised over £1400 for the charity.
Reg was born on 1st September 1908 at 141 St Leonard’s Road, Windsor, above the newsagents and tobacconist shop that his father owned and ran. He was the eldest of three brothers, all of whom worked in the family business Harrison Cycle Co. Ltd. At one time they had four shops, two in Slough High Street, one on Farnham Road and one at Ann’s Place in St. Leonard’s Road, Windsor.
Reg lived for most of his life in Slough, with his wife and two daughters. He spent most of his career working on Slough High Street. He joined his father’s business, Harrison Cycle Co Ltd, in 1925 and worked in their first Slough Branch which opened that year. Reg Harrison stayed with the three branches of Harrison’s bicycles until the last branch closed in 1960. He sadly died in December 1999.
In 2006 Reg Harrison’s daughters kindly donated the entire collection to Slough Library so that the town could have permanent access to his collection. Reg also collected material on Windsor and this collection is currently on deposit at Windsor Library.
