Brief Description: View of the Albert Bridge and the River Thames c.1930
Subject Date: About 1930
Owner: Roy Whibley Collection
Contributor: Roy Whibley Collection

Full Description: The first Albert Bridge was part of a redevelopment plan designed by Queen Victoria's husband, Prince Albert. He was concerned that the Datchet Bridge was built too close to Windsor Castle. When the railway was seeking permission to build Windsor Riverside Station during the 1840s, the company was persuaded that they should knock down the Datchet Bridge and replace it with two new ones; the Victoria and the Albert Bridges. The Albert Bridge carried traffic to the south of Datchet while Victoria took traffic to the north. The weight of traffic was so large by the start of the twentieth century that the bridge was re-built in 1920.
