Full Description: The caption on the photograph also refers to the building being originally constructed for the sum of £550 in 1847. The Chapel building became Herschel Hall in 1938 and was occupied by Buckinghamshire County Library. During the period the service was run by a team of volunteers. At the head of the library was the Honorary Secretary, T.C. Pilgrim. The library moved to a purpose built building on William Street in 1939. The site subsequently became part of the land at the rear of Woolworths and was probably demolished in about 1960. The former Wesleyan Chapel appears to have been a fairly substantial building in gothic style constructed in stone or render on brickwork. There was a small churchyard at the front and rear with access to the rear along the west boundary. Adjoining, and possibly on the same site, was Smallbone Ltd Motor Manufacturers at 17a Herschel Street. In 1954 a W. Benton is listed as the occupier of 17 Herschel Street. The caption to the photograph refers to the site being used by Witney & Sons Builders and Decorators but they are listed next door at, 18, Herschel Street, in both 1930 and 1938. |
