Full Description: Richard Bentley was the son of George Bentley, the publisher who built The Mere. Richard Bentley inherited the publishing firm from his father and in 1898 the firm was dissolved. Richard then concentrated on expanding the estate and also studied local history, meteorology, botany and other sciences. He was elected president of the Royal Meteorological Society 1905--06. A weather station was established in the grounds of The Mere. Richard Bentley died at home in 1936, aged 82.
There were no children from his marriage to Lucy, and Lucy continued to live at The Mere until 1961, when the house was sold. Lucy Bentley then moved to Windsor and died at the age of 95. In 1964 The Mere became the headquarters of the National Foundation for Educational Research (NFER) and it still remains in their hands today. |
