Full Description: Observatory House as seen from the garden, about 1900. The famous astronomer Sir William Herschel (1738-1822), who discovered Uranus, lived here with his family. He built a large telescope in his garden, which was visited by scientists and notables. The telescope was also shown as a landmark on Ordnance Survey Maps for many years. The house was demolished in 1963. |
