The Bank Run

by Brian Dilnot

When I left Slough Grammar School, my first job was a Junior Clerk with Slough Borough Council at the Town Hall - this was in 1954. One of my tasks each morning was to take the previous day's takings to Westminster Bank in Slough High street in a Chauffeured Rolls Royce provided by Sargeants the Undertakers. Having visited the bank we then went to the old library in William Street where the car parked on the forecourt whilst I collected the pennies from the ladies and gents toilets, which I then took back to the Town Hall, counted and bagged them, and they were then included in the next day's banking. At sixteen years old I felt very important travelling in the back of a "Roller". No Security Vans in those days!
